A volunteer in the wars of Venus, an inhabitant of St.
Paul's Church yard, did penance in a white sheet, in St.
Gregory's Parish Church, and 'twas observed that he behaved
with great courage, having for two or three days before
stood in the sheet in the Sun Tavern kitchen, by way of
rehearsal. The clerk of the parish set part of the 130th
psalm, in which is the following stanza; by which one would
think he had a very good opinion of the rest of the
parishioners.
O Lord our God, if you survey
  Our sins, and them peruse,
Who shall escape? Or who dare say
  I can myself excuse, &c. &c.
